“Officer! Hey—HEY! Please! Over here!”
“They’re back there—two, maybe three—I don’t know! I was just on a run, trying to clear my head. Took the shortcut by the old train tracks, like I always do, and then I heard footsteps. Fast. Heavy. I turned around, and these guys—black hoodies, masks—just charging at us. No warning. No talking. Just—bam—chasing us.
“We cut across the tracks, jumped that chain-link fence—I think I ripped my jacket—and sprinted through the alley behind that boarded-up hardware store. My friend Jamie—she was right behind me. I swear. But when we got to the construction site, she tripped. I turned back for her, but they were too close. I couldn’t—I’m sorry, I had to keep going.
“They had something in their hands. I think one of them had a knife. I couldn’t see everything—it was dark—but they knew where we’d be. It wasn’t random. They were waiting. Watching.
“Please. You have to find her. Jamie’s still back there. She couldn’t have gotten far. I heard her scream—just once—but I couldn’t stop. I thought if I could just get help—”
(Breaks, overwhelmed, then pulls it together.)
“You’ve got to go now. There’s no time.”
